Interior Painting
When was the last time your home was painted? Are you happy with your interior colors? Do your walls look bright and cheery, or dull and lifeless?
If you’re like many homeowners, your interior walls take a daily beating. Scuffs. Fingerprints. Minor dings and dents. And those water stains in the front hall where the dog shakes off when he comes in from the rain. If it’s been more than 10-15 years since your home was painted, it’s time to think about a fresh coat of color on your walls.
The Value of Interior Painting
Interior painting does more than just beautify. Here are other reasons to have your home painted now:
- Hide stains, defects and permanent marks. New paint makes wall and trim imperfections less noticeable.
- Reduce dust. Old paint attracts dirt; fresh paint keeps dust at bay, especially on plastered walls.
- Resist wear and tear. Newly painted interior surfaces protect walls from moisture and dirt.
- Promote healthy indoor air quality. Zero- or low-VOC paints and finishes reduce fumes and odors emanating from paint. VOC stands for volatile organic compounds, which are solvents that get released into the air as paint dries. Hetrick Painting commonly uses healthier zero-VOC odorless paints.
- Easy, affordable redecorating. A new wall color is the cheapest and simplest way to re-do a room and give it a whole new look.
- Boost your mood. Changing the colors that surround you can improve your entire outlook by creating a cheerier, more beautiful ambience and environment.
- Put money in your pocket. Fresh paint can increase your home’s value, and real estate agents uniformly recommend repainting before putting your home on the market for increased traffic and a higher asking price.

We Help You Make Choices
When it comes to painting, most people focus on color. But other decisions need to be made first: What type of paint, and what finish. At Hetrick, we always help customers choose the best paint for their project.
Paint type
For interior wall surfaces, latex is usually the preferred paint type. It’s durable, easy to clean, and resists fading. It also breathes, making it less likely to blister. Oil-based paint is often preferred to prime real wood moldings and trim as the oil seals the wood better than latex. At Hetrick Painting, we like to use an oil-based shellac primer on trim and then a latex paint as the top coat.
Paint finish
The shiny high gloss is easiest to clean and best for trim, high-traffic rooms like a playroom, or in rooms where grease can be splattered, like a kitchen. Semi gloss has less shine than high gloss and still cleans up well. It also tends to be slightly cheaper than high gloss. Many people prefer semi gloss for its satiny, smooth finish. Flat or matte finishes tend to be best for imperfect walls – for example, in older homes. Often, one coat of flat is all that’s needed. A disadvantage of flat paint is that it does not stand up to cleaning and can show dirt more easily than high gloss or semi gloss. Finally, eggshell is a great all-purpose finish – it hides imperfections as well as flat but is more durable and smoother to the touch. At Hetrick, we recommend eggshell for most rooms as it seems to offer the best of both flat and glossy finishes.
After choosing paint type and finish, then it’s time to consider color. Compared with picking a paint type and a paint finish, choosing a color is more complicated. There are so many options: bright, light, dark, neutral, and everything in between. At Hetrick Painting, our experienced, knowledgeable interior designers are always glad to help our customers choose the perfect paint color. With that said, here are some of our general guidelines on color:
- If you are selling your home or plan to sell soon, choose a light neutral such as white, off-white, or gray. Real estate agents agree that these are the shades that appeal to most home buyers, and they make your rooms look big and airy.
- If you’re choosing colors for a home you’ll be living in for a while, you have many options. Give some thought to the room’s purpose and the atmosphere you want to convey. You might want a bold color for a game room and a soothing one for a bedroom. At Hetrick, we help our customers use a color wheel to choose primary, secondary and accent colors that work for them.
